Accommodation
Prisons have 3 199 prisoner places confirmed on 31 July 2010. In total, 68.3% of the places were in closed prisons. As the number of prisoners increases, there is overcrowding especially in closed prisons. Currently, more prisoners need to be placed in the prisons than there are confirmed prisoner places.
When renovating prisons, the accommodation premises of prisoners have to be equipped so that they meet the requirements set on accommodation premises in general building legislation. In many prisons, each cell includes a private toilet and some even a shower. In closed prisons, there are still 222 old cells, which do not have private toilets.
In his or her free time, the prisoner is obligated to attend to the cleaning and sanitation of his or her accommodation room and the common living areas as well as to household chores.
