Criminal sanctions within the sphere of authority of the Criminal Sanctions Agency can simply be divided into prison sentences and community sanctions served in freedom.
In 2009, the average daily number of community sanctions clients was about 4 300 whereas the average daily number of prisoners was under 3 500.
In 2009, a total of 15 379 sentences were entered in a sentence register kept by the Criminal Sanctions Agency. The sentences consisted of 11 493 prison sentences, 3 875 community service sentences, and 10 juvenile punishment sentences.
The Criminal Sanctions Agency, which operates under the administrative branch of the Ministry of Justice, is responsible for the enforcement of the aforementioned sanctions.
