Building paths between mainroads -Assessment research of the development project of probation intoxicant work

Summary

The Probation Service has realised between December 2001 and 2004 in the region of metropolitan district offices a development project of intoxicant work. The aim of the project has been e.g. the securing of the treatment continuum of the clients with intoxicant problems who are released to supervision, the development of new work methods to probation intoxicant work and increasing know-how in probation intoxicant work.

Through this assessment research, information was desired on what works in the project and in its work methods and what kind of client work practises promote the intoxicant rehabilitation process of released prisoners. In addition, it was desired to focus on the development objects of the work. The objects of the assessment were focused on three different sub-areas: 1) the work process of the development project of intoxicant work, 2) co-operation networks of the project and 3) bringing forth the client's view into the entity of the project. The duration of the assessment of the project was six months, during which the assessment researcher participated intensively in the working of the project, all in all for nearly four months. The assessment researcher's approach to work was consultative. For the research, all four employees and four clients of the project were interviewed. In addition, the effects of the project were clarified in the Probation Service's district offices of the metropolitan area through a post inquiry, directed to five persons.

The development project of the probation intoxicant work has in its all activities striven to develop the work practises of intoxicant work and to experiment new work models and also bring them forth to be applied wider in probation. In the development of the work process, as good practises arises e.g. a plan of a division of labour organising the employees' work, a so called Box Game and functioning meeting practises. During its activity, the project has created a clear co-operation network between social and welfare and intoxicant agents and probation work and promoted the implementation of network like work methods. Also the clients of the project have experienced the activities of the project as supporting and clarifying their life situation. The clients of the project have been especially grateful to the employees for the time dedicated to their matters.
