Video guide supports the induction of foreign prisoners
At present, approximately 18 per cent of all prisoners are foreigners. They represent 69 different nationalities. Therefore, we need to provide information about prison life in several languages. The Criminal Sanctions Agency has already published a glossary of the terms used in the field in ten different languages and three new languages are still coming. Now, we have also released a video in five languages for sentenced people arriving in prison.
The instruction video for prisoners is available in Finnish, Arabic, Turkish, Latvian, and Albanian. The aim is that the prisoners receive basic information on the operation of a closed prison, their rights, and the sentence term in their own language. The video was made so that it can be used in all prisons − especially in closed prisons − nationwide.
The video is available on Risevision, which is the Criminal Sanctions Agency’s video channel on YouTube.
We hope that the video can be used both in and outside the prisons. The video can be shown to prisoners but also to family members and cooperation partners.
According to the equality plan of the Criminal Sanctions Agency, we have to make special arrangements to ensure that the needs of prisoners, who are members of linguistic minorities, are taken care of. In rehabilitation, we use foreign language material if it is available.
The pilot video was made as part of the project called Prison Term as a Possibility.
